Pigs for Pets

One of the first questions that people ask is, “do pigs make good pets?”. As someone who has lived with pigs for pets, I can answer, yes, small pet pigs can be great pets!

Pigs are incredibly intelligent animals. In fact, they are the forth smartest in the world behind humans, chimps, dolphins, and whales. This means they can be quit personable as pets. It also means that can be easier to train and that they are very sociable. However, it also means that they can get bored quickly and require a lot of attention. It’s important that owners be home a lot to play with their pigs, or raise multiple miniature pigs at a time so that they aren’t alone. Pigs that are kept has pets are also very clean and odor free, and generally non-allergenic.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I done enough research? – Have you gone through the mini-course on this site and looked at additional references which are recommended throughout the course? You should read through all of them before taking on pigs as pets. Keep in mind that owning a pig is not like owning a dog or a cat.
  • Can I afford to take good care of my new pet? – Have you considered all of the expenses over the life of your new pet?
  • Will I have time to train it properly? – Many breeders will potty train your pig, but it still needs to learn to behave and not be spoiled or aggressive.
  • Is there room in my lifestyle for small pet pigs? – Are you prepared for a 15 year commitment to taking care of a pet pig?
  • Does your community allow pot bellied pigs for pets? – Many towns have restrictions on farm animals.
  • Is your home the proper environment for a pig? – Is there space for a pig, both indoors and outdoors?
  • Are you home enough to give your pig the attention and care it needs? – Do you leave all day to go to work? Someone should be with your pig during the day, or at least have a pair of pigs so they can play together.
  • Do you have access to a vet in your area? – It’s important to have a vet nearby that deals with miniature pigs. You will need regular vaccinations and hoof trimmings.

Pigs can be litter box trained, similar to that of a cat. They can also be trained to go out doors like a dog if you train them for that. Many breeders will have them trained before you get your baby pigs for pets.

Some pet pigs can become spoiled or aggressive if they aren’t trained properly. It’s important not to reward this behavior and teach your pig that is it not ok. Some of the additional resources that are listed in the mini-course will help you train your pig properly.
